Your PNR number is usually printed on your railway ticket or booking confirmation.

What Is a PNR Number?

PNR stands for Passenger Name Record. It is a unique number associated with a railway reservation and is used to retrieve information related to a booked journey.

A PNR can provide information such as the train number and name, journey date, source and destination stations, class, passenger details, booking status, current status, fare and charting status.

Indian Railways’ official Passenger Reservation Enquiry system also uses the PNR number to provide the current status of a booked reservation.

What Does PNR Status Mean?

Your PNR status tells you the current reservation position of your ticket. Some of the commonly displayed railway reservation statuses include:

CNF – Confirmed

CNF means your reservation is confirmed. The coach and berth information may be available after the reservation chart is prepared.

RAC – Reservation Against Cancellation

RAC means Reservation Against Cancellation. An RAC passenger is permitted to travel, subject to the applicable railway reservation rules. The final accommodation may depend on subsequent cancellations and chart preparation.

WL – Waiting List

WL means Waiting List. Your reservation has not yet received confirmed accommodation. The current status can change before the final reservation chart is prepared.

GNWL – General Waiting List

GNWL refers to General Waiting List. It is one of the waiting-list categories used by Indian Railways.

RLWL – Remote Location Waiting List

RLWL refers to Remote Location Wait List and is associated with reservations from certain remote-location quotas.

PQWL – Pooled Quota Waiting List

PQWL means Pooled Quota Waiting List. It applies to reservations made under a pooled quota.

TQWL – Tatkal Quota Waiting List

TQWL refers to a waiting-list status associated with the Tatkal quota.

CAN – Cancelled

CAN indicates that the passenger or reservation has been cancelled or modified according to the status information returned by the railway reservation system.

These status codes and their meanings are listed by the Indian Railways Passenger Reservation Enquiry system.

What Information Can You See in PNR Status?

Depending on the reservation record, a PNR enquiry can display important journey and ticket information, including:

  • PNR number
  • Train number
  • Train name
  • Journey date
  • From station
  • To station
  • Boarding point
  • Reservation up to station
  • Travel class
  • Booking status
  • Current passenger status
  • Coach and berth information when available
  • Total fare
  • Charting status
  • Passenger information
  • Railway remarks, if applicable

IRCTC documentation also describes PNR enquiry as a way to view the current status of a booked ticket and related journey and passenger information.

Booking Status vs Current Status

You may notice both Booking Status and Current Status in your PNR result.

Booking Status refers to the reservation status assigned when the ticket was booked.

Current Status shows the latest available reservation position. For example, a passenger may initially have been booked as WL 25 and later move to WL 8, RAC or CNF as reservations change.

This is why checking your PNR again closer to the journey date can be useful.

Can PNR Status Change?

Yes. Your current reservation status can change before the final reservation chart is prepared.

For example, a waiting-list ticket may move toward RAC or confirmed status as other passengers cancel their reservations or as accommodation becomes available.

Indian Railways specifically notes that the current status may change if the final charts have not yet been prepared.

What Is Charting Status?

Charting status indicates whether the reservation chart for your journey has been prepared.

If the final chart has not been prepared, your current reservation status may still change. After chart preparation, the reservation information generally provides a clearer indication of the accommodation assigned for the journey.

When Should You Check Your PNR Status?

You can check your PNR status whenever you want to know the latest available information about your reservation.

It can be particularly useful:

  • After booking a railway ticket
  • When your ticket is on the waiting list
  • When your ticket is in RAC
  • Before travelling
  • After a status change
  • Before checking your coach and berth details
  • After the reservation chart is prepared
