Key IRCTC Cancellation Rules You Must Know

Detailed rules for Tatkal, Waiting List auto-refunds, Mixed family tickets, and train disruptions.

⚡
Tatkal & Premium Tatkal Tickets

No refund is granted on cancellation of confirmed Tatkal and Premium Tatkal tickets. However, a 100% full refund is granted if: (1) The train is cancelled by Railways, (2) The train is running late by over 3 hours and passenger does not travel, or (3) The train is diverted onto another route. Tatkal waitlisted (TQWL) tickets follow standard WL clerkage rules.

⏳
Waitlisted & RAC Tickets

If your ticket remains on the waiting list after final chart preparation, online e-tickets are automatically cancelled and the refund is credited directly to your bank account with a nominal clerkage deduction of ₹60 (+ 5% GST for AC). If you cancel an RAC or WL ticket yourself, it must be done at least 30 minutes before scheduled train departure.

👥
Partially Confirmed (Party) PNR Rule 6(3)

If one PNR has both Confirmed and Waitlisted/RAC passengers, and you choose to cancel all passengers up to 30 minutes before train departure, full refund of fare less clerkage (₹60) is granted for the confirmed passengers too! This official rule prevents passengers from losing 50% or 100% of their fare.

🚆
Train Cancelled by Railways

If the train is cancelled by Indian Railways due to weather, accidents, or operational reasons, 100% full refund is credited automatically to your bank account for e-tickets. No TDR filing is required. For PRS counter tickets, surrender the ticket at the counter within 72 hours of scheduled departure.

GAZETTE NOTIFICATION VERIFICATION

Commercial Circular No. 08 of 2026 & Gazette G.S.R. 41(E) Explained

Official clarification on why the stricter 72-hour / 8-hour refund rules apply ONLY to Vande Bharat Sleeper & Amrit Bharat II Express, and NOT regular trains.

Background & Legal Scope: On January 19, 2026, the Ministry of Railways (Railway Board) issued Commercial Circular No. 08 of 2026 communicating the Gazette of India notification G.S.R. 41(E) (effective January 16, 2026), titled “Introduction of Vande Bharat Sleeper and Amrit Bharat II with rationalised refund provision.”

1. Principal Rules 2015 Remain in Force for Standard Trains The notification does NOT repeal or replace the principal Railway Passengers (Cancellation of Ticket and Refund of Fare) Rules, 2015 for regular trains. Standard trains (Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Mail/Express, Superfast, Garib Rath, and Vande Bharat Chair Car) continue strictly under the standard 48-hour, 12-hour, and 4-hour slabs with flat minimum charges.
2. Stricter Slabs are Limited to Vande Bharat Sleeper & Amrit Bharat II The tighter cancellation slabs (25% deduction > 72 hours, 50% deduction between 72h and 8h, and 0% refund < 8h) are specialized amendments inserted into Rules 6 & 8 that apply strictly and exclusively to Vande Bharat Sleeper Express and the reserved classes of Amrit Bharat II Express.
3. Dispelling Viral Media Rumors Viral social media posts and headlines prematurely claimed that “Railways has eliminated refunds within 8 hours for all trains.” This calculator verifies and implements the official legal text: standard trains retain the 4-hour window, while only modern sleeper segments enforce the 8-hour cutoff.

IRCTC Refund Calculator

The IRCTC Refund Calculator helps you estimate how much money you’ll actually get back before cancelling your ticket on IRCTC.

Just enter your ticket details like journey date, cancellation time, class, booking status, and total fare. The calculator instantly shows the expected refund amount based on official IRCTC refund rules.

This tool is especially useful because IRCTC refund charges change depending on:

  • Time left before departure
  • Ticket type (General or Tatkal)
  • Booking status (Confirmed, RAC, Waiting List)
  • Travel class

No guesswork. No confusion.

How IRCTC Refund Is Calculated?

IRCTC does not follow a flat refund rule. The deduction depends on when you cancel your ticket.

Here’s how it works in simple terms:

  • More time before departure → higher refund
  • Less time before departure → higher cancellation charges
  • Tatkal tickets → very limited or no refund
  • Waiting List tickets → mostly refunded after minimal charges

This calculator automatically applies the correct rule once you enter your details.

What This IRCTC Refund Calculator?

This tool supports:

  • General quota tickets
  • Tatkal tickets
  • All major classes (Sleeper, 3A, 2A, 1A, Executive)
  • Confirmed (CNF), RAC, and Waiting List (WL) tickets

It calculates:

  • Cancellation charges
  • IRCTC service charges
  • Net refund amount

Everything in one place.

Why Use This IRCTC Refund Calculator?

Let’s be real. IRCTC refund rules are confusing and change based on multiple conditions.

This tool helps you:

  • Decide whether to cancel or not
  • Avoid refund surprises
  • Save time checking IRCTC rules manually
  • Understand how much money you’ll lose or get back

Perfect for frequent travellers, office commuters, and anyone booking long-distance trains.

Important Notes About IRCTC Refunds

  • This calculator follows official IRCTC refund rules
  • Actual refund may vary slightly due to rounding or bank processing
  • Refunds are usually credited to the original payment method
  • Bank processing may take 3–7 working days

Always treat this as an estimate, not a guarantee.
